It’s the first full week of 2024’s Black History Month and to say it’s starting off SCRONG would be an understatement.

This year’s BHM theme is African-Americans in the Arts and what better way to celebrate than by watching the beauty that is Blackness.
Movie: They Cloned Tyrone (2023)

Starring the underrated John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx, this movie about a regular dude in the hood goes through day-to-day, gets shot, and wakes up the next morning as if nothing happened. Until, he’s confronted by someone saying they saw him die! A series of eerie events lead to the trio mentioned above to find out about a government conspiracy happening right under their noses.
When I tell you I had to watch this movie twice to let it sink in… I loved the creativity behind the costuming, hair, and makeup as well as the story told.
Not many in my circle have watched the movie and I’ve been dying to talk about it for a hot minute with somebody!
TV Show: Abbott Elementary (2021-Present)

If you haven’t already been watching, Abbott Elementary is a sitcom that takes place in a public school in Philadelphia where the main character (written and played by Quinta Brunson) is an optimistic elementary school teacher who wants to make the best of what she’s got!
The jokes are hilarious and deadpan delivery from Tyler James Williams as Quinta’s eventual love interest bring me so much joy as it resembles one of my favorite shows of all time; Parks & Recreation.
The two series parallel each other by both being mockumentaries, being set in the public sector and featuring fiercely optimistic female leads. Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope spends most of her time fighting to make Pawnee, Indiana better for its residents. She faces a large amount of bureaucracy, which isn’t helped by the fact that she has a thankless job with little room for effect. Abbott Elementary‘s Janine Teagues faces a similar situation. She works for a public school where funds are not available for school supplies. She also has to contend with her incompetent boss and deal with red tape when it comes to fixing things.
How Abbott Elementary Parallels – and Surpasses – Parks and Recreation
With a predominantly Black cast and some really cute kids, this show gives pure wholesomeness.
